Publisher: Spes Magna Games

Have you ever watched a movie full of swashbuckling goodness and thought, "This would make a great game?" I know I have, and long before I played RPGs. As a kid, I loved Errol Flynn and Tyrone Powers. Many a Saturday was spent pretending to be Captain Blood, Robin Hood, or Zorro. And let's not forget the Three Musketeers, Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver, and, yes, even Don Quixote.

The roleplaying aspects of the swashbuckler genre work well-enough with any game system. Tongue-in-cheek humor and traded bon mots don't require game mechanics. Swashbuckling combat must be fast-paced, highly mobile, and full of flashy attacks. Unfortunately, the world's most popular roleplaying game's combat system doesn't score high marks in these areas.

Fencing & Firearms (F&F) respects the core mechanics of the game but still addresses widely perceived problems with the combat rules. F&F doesn't change racial traits, class features, or skills. It has as little impact on core rules feats as possible. Our primary goal is that DMs can take this book and drop it into their games with a minimal amount of work. F&F focuses on:

* speeding up play,
* keeping each player involved even when it's not his turn,
* providing all players with more combat options, and
* making combat maneuvers easier to use.

And this is just the first part of F&F. The second part deals with black powder weapons and how to use them with your game.
Price: $3.00

Author: Paul 'Wiggy' Wade-Williams

DETAILED INFORMATION

The year is 1636 and France is sick. Like an ancient elm, its core is being devoured from within. Yet from outside it appears strong and vibrant. Louis XIII sits on the throne, but his rule is that of a puppet monarch. While France rots, Louis spends his time throwing extravagant balls (the cost of which places a heavy tax burden on the peasantry), hunting all manner of beasts (including, some say, Protestants dressed up as animals), sponsoring artists to produce works of art for his private adoration, and ignoring the pleas of the downtrodden citizens who clamor for justice and clemency.

Pulling Louis' strings is Armand Jean du Plessis, Cardinal-Duc de Richelieu, better known simply as Cardinal Richelieu. He serves both as Cardinal of Paris and as Louis' chief adviser, both positions of great power.

Religious persecution is rife, and has been for over a century. France's Catholics have engaged in many cruel massacres of the country's Protestants, including the infamous St. Bartholomew's Day massacre in 1572.

Richelieu has entered France, a Catholic country, into the Thirty Years' War (a name it has yet to acquire in the current age) but on the side of the Protestants. Richelieu's aim was to break the power of Spain and the Hapsburg Empire, against whom the Protestants were fighting, but his views were not shared by all. France's nobles and ministers reacted angrily to this act, many seeing it as treachery against the Papacy, but Louis ratified the Cardinal's order, and few dissenters had the stomach to argue with the King.

France's armies have not fared well. After a disastrous campaign beyond their eastern border, France's army is in retreat. Soldiers from Spain and the Holy Roman Empire are marauding throughout the French countryside, making their way toward the gates of Paris.

In order to bolster France's demoralized army, Richelieu has raised taxes and introduced conscription, though it is the poorer members of society who suffer the most from these measures. Famine wracks the land, forcing the already overtaxed peasants into increased hardship. Resentment and anger are bubbling beneath the scum of corruption which floats atop French society, threatening to break the surface and drag the country into civil war.

The nobility of France has grown corrupt, though some would hasten to add they are simply more corrupt than their ancestors. Richelieu's taxation policies are a mere inconvenience to the aristocracy, and while they dine and dance, their peasants starve and succumb to disease. Many speak of deviltry among the nobility, of midnight ceremonies honoring their unholy counterparts in Hell, of young girls taken by force never to be seen again, and of terrible bargains sealed with blood and souls. But such talk is commonplace when times are bad.

Stuck for ideas? Let 5 Adventures, 25 Rooms break your writer's block.

5 Adventures, 25 Rooms offers five adventure synopses, one new template, and two new monsters. The adventure synopses assume a fantasy setting, but otherwise strive to be more or less system neutral. These synopses are not complete adventures. Instead, each synopsis is more like an adventure seed. You provide the maps and the game mechanics to make that seed grow into a fully realized scenario.

Throughout the PDF, you'll find suggestions for adapting the synopses to the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. The template and monsters are fully compatible with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.

Adventure synopses include the following:

Guard Duty: The heroes are hired to guard a lady threatened by her fiance's rivals. Can the heroes protect her until her fiance arrives?

Shelter from the Storm: While pursuing a vicious killer, the heroes encounter a strange family in an abandoned windmill.

Bird Flu of the Damned: A strange sickness has struck emu ranch country. Can the heroes help the ranchers?

Love Lost: Aengus has lost the love of his life and is hunted by killers, and he turns to the heroes for help entering the fey realm to win her hand.

Just as monks, fighters and rogues can use feats to adjust and modify their fighting styles, clerics, druids, rangers and paladins should have a range of options that let them adapt their divinely-granted abilities.

Spellcasters may wish to focus on learning new ways to use their divine spells (such as with Healing Benevolence), increase just one aspect of their spellcasting power (perhaps with Domain Focus), or master a priesthood that grants spells only after the caster's blood has been spilled (with Blood Priest). There are also numerous feats nonspellcaster characters that are devout followers of a god can qualify for and find useful (such as Domain Acolyte and Miracle Worker).

With these feats a campaign can include priests who are not clerics, allowing gods of battle to be served by fighters with some access to the War domain and gods of magic and healing to have temples filled with celestial sorcerers able to cast cure light wounds.

In previous years it was a joyful and cheery event. These attractions, however, are outmoded and the infrastructure is old and neglected. A foul smell hangs in the air. The show consists of malformed people who disgust and frighten. Little joy is offered by the twisted clowns, and the barker's outdated speaking-style and French-tinged accent strengthens a feeling of unease.

It is a dreadful show.

Just in time for your traditional Halloween Call of Cthulhu or Basic Roleplaying game, here are six Halloween-themed adventures — winners and honorable mentions of the 2009 Chaosium.com Halloween Adventure Contest.

FLESH FESTIVAL

Adventure by Victor M. Aguirre. Flesh Festival is an adventure for CoC which takes place during the Roaring Twenties, in some place of New England. The Gamemaster may have to adjust the scenario to the requirements of his campaign; any town of Massachusetts should fit perfectly. The date of the adventure coincides with the arrival of Samhain, although the exact year is left to the Gamemaster design. We recommend the investigators to have some experience, although it is not essential for the adventure to be played.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

Written by Jason Lindsey. This story is for a group of investigators who have just finished with an adventure or a major campaign. Rusty's diner is off the beaten path and lets them get a chance to clean up and recover for a bit before they depart for their next adventure.

This is where the fun begins.

THE FACULTY PARTY

Written by Jon Hook. The Miskatonic University English Department is holding their annual Halloween party, and you have been cordially invited. The English Dept. party is unlike the kind of party found at the local speak-easy; their party is a series of dramatic readings covering some of the greatest authors of horror fiction. The party-goers meet in a smoke-filled room and debate the authors over snacks, coffee, English and Indian tea.

Conversations and smoke float through the air as the faculty and guests are having a good time, everyone except Prof. Janice Moor. Prof. Moor teaches French Romantic Lit and has been in a blue mood for several weeks now. Her friends and co-workers had hoped that the party would help cheer her up, but no amount of joy has succeeded in lifting her out of her dark depression. Everyone secretly wonders what is bothering her.

HALLOWEEN NUIT

Adventure by Oscar Rios. It's a special time for Miskatonic University, as well all of Arkham. A collection of artifacts has just arrived from The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo. The collection is on a North American tour, and is scheduled to remain in Arkham until January before moving on to the Field Museum of Natural History, in Chicago. Until then local students, academics, and visitors will have the opportunity see first-hand some of the wonders of ancient Egypt.

MUST THE SHOW GO ON?

Written by Jason Williams. Arkham is in for a very special treat this Halloween when a magician from Boston, who bills himself as Garlock the Great, plans to give the performance of his life at the Manley Theatre located at 670 Gedney Street. Rumors and newspaper stories precede his arrival with tales about his years spent learning secrets at the feet of the guru's of Nepal. Excitement has built and the one night only show has sold out.

THE DEAD SCHOOL

Written by Paul Hebron. October brings nothing but gloom and rain to the Temple Hill Private School, situated out in the Massachusetts woods. It is an exclusive home to the sons of the state's wealthiest families, and its teachers provide a quality education-especially since George Edgerton came to be principal of the prestigious prep school. Edgerton has allowed, for the first time in the school's history, a Halloween party to be held for all the staff and students to enjoy-except for the investigators whom have found themselves in detention. Day-dreaming of the fun they might have had, while waiting for the party to end, the investigators are suddenly brought back to earth by the sound of screams; and then they all black out. When they wake, they find a strange new land of death and voodoo!

MISKATONIC UNIVERSITY LIBRARY ASSOCIATION monographs are longer works by one or more authors on a subject of import to Call of Cthulhu roleplayers. On these products the author has also fulfilled the functions of editor and layout artist; we at Chaosium have done little in the way of editorial. We found these works compelling and thought that you would enjoy them. Through the publication of monographs we can offer our most loyal fans more information more easily, and evaluate the potential of these works for eventual release to the wholesale market.

Welcome to Queensguard! Queensguard is a short campaign for the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game. It is set in an alternate version of America in which steam technology and magic are woven into the fabric of society.

Queensguard is divided into two acts, each of which should consume approximately two four-hour game sessions. The campaign strives to be consistently fast-paced and exciting, and it takes advantage of the unusual setting. Investigation, clever planning, and physical combat are all important. For a plotted scenario, Queensguard grants players a large degree of freedom. Key tasks within each act may be completed in any order, frequent "Contingency" sections help the keeper adapt the plot to varied player choices, and players may succeed or fail in Act 1 without foreclosing opportunities in Act 2.

The four-session campaign detailed in this book need not be the end of your adventures in the Kingdom of America. A substantial amount of information about the politics, history, technology, and magic of the setting is provided in the next chapter, "A Tour of the World of Queensguard." The two campaign chapters contain many additional ideas and characters. Using this information and a little creativity, Queensguard can be a steampunk setting for Call of Cthulhu adventures of your own devising.
