Character Workbook: Wizard for PFRPG
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer]
Publisher: Asparagus Jumpsuit
Date Added: 05/18/2013 11:53:10
Character Workbook: Wizard for PFRPG I have a secret: I hate the 'number-crunching' aspects of character generation, especially in systems which have pre-conceived ideas of particular groupings into which you have to shoehorn that delightful concept that sprang into your mind when someone proposed the game that's being planned... even more so if it's an unfamiliar ruleset so I don't know how to do half the things that I want my new guy to have or be able to do. Here's a product which can help. It takes you by the hand and leads you through the process of creating a Wizard character for the Pathfinder RPG, explaining each stage and the ramifications of your choices. The really neat thing is, it doesn't just let you set up your starting character, it takes you through levelling up, level by level right up to level 20. Now, you will probably have figured out how Wizard characters work by then, even so it is very useful in ensuring that you do not miss anything out. No forgetting which levels you gain feats or special abil...

Fantasy icons vol.2
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer]
Publisher: The Forge Studios
Date Added: 05/18/2013 10:32:40
Fantasy icons vol.2 This is a neat collection of sketches that can be used to denote different sections of your notes, or just to fill in blank space, to give your material a professional look - these days with computer technology at your finger tips, even if you do not intend to publish you can give a professional spin to handouts and other game materials... and who knows, maybe your best adventures and other resources may end up on here - and in my review pile! The icons are presented in uniform style as roundels, in grey scale, looking like ink over pencil sketches. There are thirteen of them and they are fairly generic - you decide their significance, if any, as suits your needs. A nice little collection at reasonable cost which will enhance any fantasy materials that you are putting together for your own use or for publication....

Act Ten Core Rules
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer]
Publisher: Act Ten Role Playing Network
Date Added: 05/18/2013 10:20:11
Act Ten Core Rules The Introduction contains the usual 'what is role playing?' section, but takes an unusual approach - one I've often used as it happens, comparing role-playing to improvisational drama. Of course role-playing has one significant difference from improv: rules! Even here the approach is civilised, so good it's worth repeating:- "The rules are only here to litigate scenes in the Episode. Rules do not dictate plot and they never take over the actors." The roles of Director (GM) and Actors (the players and their characters) are explained, along with the way that the Act Ten Role Playing Network has been constructed as an integral resource for participants in the game. Neat! The terminology for talking about the game draws on the early improv analogy, trending to movie-speak rather than to the stage, and it is used well and consistently throughout. Straight on to Traits, which begins the character creation process. Traits are used to define the character in terms of the way they act,...

Flesh & Blood - BBFRPG Accessory
by Jim L.
Publisher: DwD Studios
Date Added: 05/18/2013 09:54:06
Flesh & Blood - BBFRPG Accessory Our group is just getting started with this game system, so this accessory couldn't come at a better time. I was very pleased to see a long list of races that players could look at and let their imaginations run wild. The original list of races was fine in the core rulebook, but I felt that more was needed. I just figured I'd have to do it myself, but this has made things way easier. I look forward to seeing more races in the future, but this gives us a good base to extrapolate for other races if need be. I rarely give anything a perfect score, but I feel very positive about this accessory. If you are running or playing a Bare Bones Fantasy game, I recommend this product....

Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files #1
by John G. [Featured Reviewer]
Publisher: Rebellion Publishing Ltd
Date Added: 05/18/2013 07:35:44
Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files #1 This book is VINTAGE awesomeness! See the earliest days of Judge Dredd, including an original treatment of him as "judge, jury and executioner" that was adjusted down for the ongoing stories. This book collects the earliest Dredd stories from 2000AD in the late 1970s. What the stories lack in subtlety they make up for in old-school action. The character is not fully fleshed out, and these early stories have some of the same noir feeling as the Batman stories from the late 1930s. There are better Dredd books, but this volume is essential if you are relatively new to the character and want to dive into the earliest days. This book is also worthwhile if you are a child of the 70s and miss some of the straight-ahead storytelling and action from that era. Plus, be on the watch for early work from well-known creators like Brian Bolland. It's a visible surprise when his work pops up (like Bolland's one-page artwork in Walter the Wobot near the back of the book)...

Achtung! Cthulhu - Zero Point - Three Kings - PDQ Core Rule Book
by Cedric C. [Featured Reviewer]
Publisher: Modiphius
Date Added: 05/17/2013 17:43:32
Achtung! Cthulhu - Zero Point - Three Kings - PDQ Core Rule Book PDQ: Roughly half the book is based upon the PDQ system adapted for pulp Call of Cthulhu. Optional rules include Mythos Dice and Heroism. If you're not familiar with the PDQ system, it boils down to a simulationist task resolution system, where the GM sets a task difficulty, and the player rolls dice and modifies them to see if he succeeds. PDQ, however, adds some nice RPG color to this task. Rather than predefined skills, a player starts out with a set number of modifiers. He then selects his skills and traits. based on his character, subject to the GM. So, for example, a character can have Good [+2]: Personality: Fearless, encouragig the player to roleplay his character a certain way. The PDQ core system is available online for free. Adventure: Three Kings: While it's obvious the writers did their research, I felt let down by the lack of specifics in this half of the book. The adventure felt more like a campaign of adventure seeds, than the highly descriptive Cthulhu adventures w...

POSTMODERN: Fantastic Classes
by Timothy P.
Publisher: Big Finger Games
Date Added: 05/17/2013 15:50:46
POSTMODERN: Fantastic Classes this is an excellent addition to any d20 modern gamers collection. if you've ever wanted to play the modern equivalent to a classic D&D class, such as the paladin, monk, wizard, ranger, psychic warrior, etc, this is basically a must have, as it's specifically made for that. also, in addition to it's specific focus, it adds the "Shadowborn Hero" class, which is excellent if you want to play a creature of shadow right from the start, and want to expand your options beyond the very basic feats and races available in Urban Arcana, or if you prefer to play a mutant, there's an entire Shadowborn Hero class tree dedicated to giving you mutation points to spend on extra or improved mutations, always welcome. if you want to have a fairly decent amount of low level magical or psionic ability, then there are several class tree's which allow you to while maintaining balance, and there's even a talent tree that let's you gain an animal companion after just 1 other talent, so you could hav...

ICONS: Great Power Great Power is an awesome product! I love the art and the layout is amazing! As always, Steve Kenson has put out the best material possible for the ICONS line. The only thing I can say negative about Great Power PDF is the lack of bookmarks and the Vehicle power is a little unclear as to what kind of vehicle you can get for your power level. Otherwise perfect!

Rolemaster Classic Arms Law
by Ted F.
Publisher: Guild Companion Publications
Date Added: 05/17/2013 12:39:14
Rolemaster Classic Arms Law Great game. I've always loved Rolemaster, and this rule set is great. Finally, a combat system that gives good realism. I only have two beefs: 1) It has no means of rolling for "called shots" - as in real life you can certainly "shoot for the head". 2) The armor tables are a bit too restricting. Real people wearing full plate have no trouble doing back flips, cartwheels, and other maneuvers, so they shouldn't be *quite* as restrictive. Medeival pictures are available of archers wearing plate....
