Trinity
by Keith J. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/27/2009 10:53:47
Trinity is an excellent game system and a rich and complex sci-fi setting, so I encourage people to find one of the many copies of the rulebook floating out there at gamestores and eBay. That said, this review is about the quality of the PDF and not the substance of the game.

My group and I just started a new Trinity campaign, so while I have the hardcopies of the entire game line, I figured that purchasing a PDF copy would be extremely useful for me as a storyteller. (I use PDFs to copy important text, such as equipment and powers possessed by the PCs, and to quickly search for rules during a session.)

Unfortunately, this PDF was poorly scanned and copying the text is a nightmare. I can't tell you the number of times I've tried copying a paragraph, only to end up discovering that I've only grabbed half the text. Only having, say, the left half of the paragraph is just enough to make copying it worthless.

What I wouldn't give for an OEF version (or at least a cleaner scan) of the rulebook or players guide. Unfortunately, given how this game line isn't on White Wolf's radar anymore, I'm not holding my breath.

I'd like to purchase the entire gameline in PDF, but after getting the main book and the players guide in PDF, I'll stick to my hardcopies.

Scion: Hero
by RAISTLIN W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/24/2009 13:25:32
A fascinating concept in magic-flavored superhero gaming. As the children of gods (with the potential to become gods themselves) the PCs are goodly powerful to start, but not unmanageably so. Even with only a few pantheons detailed in full for player characters there is room for a huge variety of concepts.

The rule system is a little more complex than it needs to be, and more complex than previous World of Darkness games. It took me way longer than it should have to create even a simple character. I wouldn't recommend this as a first RPG to anyone, and experiecned Storytellers may want to trim down the mechanics a little. Even taking that into account, though, the game is a great value for its rich, deep background material.

Aberrant
by Brent M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/28/2009 23:08:41
My review is not about the system, for I believe the system is flexible and in the right GM's hands, can be quite effective.

This product gets 3 stars because the page numbers on the pdf document don't line up. In other DrivethruRPG products, the front and back cover have been labeled A and B, and the pagination is correct. It is not here.

In addition, the pages are not lined up straight. They are slightly tilted.

Play Aberrant! However, I don't know that I would advise buying this book.

Aberrant
by Chris M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/22/2009 16:33:53
While I'm quite late picking up Aberrant, I still think this was another great example of the kind of games White Wolf is great at. Coming off of similar games (Scion and Exalted) made by this company, I'm no stranger to the intricate setting and the detail they go into so that immersion into this world they are offering up is fairly easy. No surprise as far as the number of moral "gray areas" and the various different groups with their agendas (hidden or not). I've come to expect a great backstory to an offering from White Wolf, and this didn't fail to deliver.

While the bulk of what Novas can do is a little limiting (compared to something like the Heroes system), it still offers plenty of room to create a being fairly unique. I would say the rest of the Aberrant/Trinity line is going to be slowly added to my list, after this one.

Scan-wise, great. No glaring issues from the scan. Good job White Wolf, and great job DriveThruRPG.

Aberrant: Underworld

The book is good. if you like Aberrant and were looking for a good set piece buy this book. it details the major personalities behind organized crime in the Aberrant world. however there is one major issue with the PDF. the picture in it are mostly blacked out, or partially blacked out. I found it very annoying. if you look past this it is still a decent book.

They're just the default character-sheets, with a little 'stamp' on them in the upper-left and right hand courners, for American, United European Allies, Or Axis...

Waste of time, if you ask me.

Scion: Hero

Let's get one thing out of the way: I don't like the storyteller system. In fact, I hate the storyteller system. Scion, which uses this system is one of the single best gaming books I have ever read.

Scion meshes the ancient and the modern in a flavorful and beautiful way. It is quite possible that a reader may be looking through it in order to find a specific rule and get distracted by some interesting power or back story.

The book itself is well organized, especially considering that White Wolf made it, but most of the rules can be found easily, and the rules themselves are very simple.

Scion allows characters to exhibit the character to use cool powers from the straightforward like lifting a light pole and bashing a monster with it to the out-and-out awesome like locking eyes with someone and prohibiting him from moving until you remove your gaze or talking to the spirit of inanimate objects.

There are a few balance issues, but it plays so well that these will likely become a non-issue. The included adventure takes up a good deal of space, but seems well put together and is fun to read, if nothing else.

Aberrant is perhaps one of the best super hero game systems I have ever looked at. With it you can make characters that seem "super" easier than in most other games.

If you're wanting a game where super heroes are only slightly better than normal people, then this isn't for you, but if you want true super heroes, go for it.

Seeds of Tomorrow (Scion)
by Jason N. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/12/2009 15:41:20
The Awesome: SoT presents a Scion adventure which does have a place for combat but, by and large, not combat skills are going to be most useful. Good mentals to figure things out, socials to get information, even purview uses which can be used to overcome hardships. If you are tired of bug hunts, or feel like that is all Scion comes out to, this adventure will be a breath of fresh air. One could also point to it as a counterexample of the people who say Scion is all bug hunts, but at this point even the dimmest critics should realize it isn't, but you never know. Anyway, cool and different. No titanspawn to fight yet plenty of challenging obstacles

The Good: The adventure is overall well written. The characters are good and intelligent. They have appropriate depth, and apart from the Ugly (see below) I can identify with them. We were given enough for each personality to have some quirks, and no one (to me) seemed throw away. The Manitou Scion was a nice touch.

The Bad: Bits of the story would be awful easy to unravel with the right powers. Mystery is a perennial offender here, but to be fair, if your running a mystery, mystery is not your friend, and short of basically neutering it and laughing at the player for daring spend points there, I have no suggestions. More problematic is a villainous figure who could be figured out immediately via Psychic Profiler or Brehon's eye as a foe, and no particular defense (again, GM could give him an artifact, but again, that is unfairly neutering powers, which I am loathe to do). Ultimately, this can be cut out by not having him show to talk to the players, but then the villain is hidden until the end and you get "and it turns out this was the plan of...THIS GUY YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF!" which is less cool.

The Ugly:It hurts my head beyond reason that the gods, most of whom have mental and social epics, could be foiled because someone told the kids a bad person was coming. Thoth maybe, but mac Lir and Apollo it seems a bit off. And Thoth strikes me as the sort to figure out something is amiss here. Most of the visitations involve blatant supernatural effects (talking crows, shining lights, artifacts) and "cuz someone said so" stikes me as an odd reason to just reject it. It just feels wrong, and generally epic charisma or manipulation should soothe even that over. Were I to run it I would leave that off and just have the OoDG pick up the kids.

My only other note is this: I, personally, don't like the Order of Divine Glory. I personally seem them as evil straw man for making the dominant organized faiths as bad guys, and their lasting so long working against epically intelligent gods, who they are fucking with on purpose, hurts my head. Maybe if they were recent here while the gods were distracted, but not overall. This is NOT, however, a commentary of any sort on the adventure; It is a bias I thought I should make clear to anyone reading my commentary so they take it with whatever grain of salt they see as appropriate.

Adventure!
by David B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/28/2008 22:38:03
I love this system. For those of you not familiar the Trinity Universe has three main era's (Trinity mid 22nd century far future game, Aberrant early 21st century, and Adventure early 20th Century) that were released in reverse order and each have slightly different themes but share a metaplot. It includes a few extension on the standard Aberrant Rule set (many of which are backwards compatable to abberant games) that allow for a better gaming experience. Examples include abilities to let players do minor alterations to a scene (as if they were the storyteller and only with storyteller permission) that allow for more of the twists of fate and coincidences that the system wishes to encourage. At first this sounded like a bad idea to me but with the system it presents it went off very smoothly and naturally in my game. The characters are no where near as powerful in raw terms as character from the two later settings but with the emphasis on storytelling backgrounds organization and abilitys which manifest as luck they tend to work very well and be fun to both play and manage. The story also has a great system for high end (over 5 dot) backgrounds, and balancing gadgets and equipment produced by supernaturally intelligent characters both with wider applications in other games in the system.

The general mood of the game is more in line with globe trotting adventures like Indiana Jones with a little of the Film Noir flavor, and some influence from period detect pieces and Victorian pulp high adventure. Probably not the most elequent description but it is what I took away from it.

For a White Wolf system the Trinity universe on a whole is a lot more hopeful and higher tone that their standard fare (even though they do occasionally touch on that especially in abberant).

I would recommend it to anyone interested in a new novel system for mostly human (but exceptional) characters. Anyone interested in the backstory on the Trinity Universe (which has Sci-Fi and Super Hero(more like Normal People with Super Powers as opposed to Super Hero but you get the idea) flavored settings). A slightly happier setting that follows the White Wolf 5 dot system. Or anyone who would likes any other white wolf systems (especially Exalted which I see as the Heir the the Trinity Universe mentality of game design). Or just anyone willing to take my word on it being a really cool product.

Sorry second post on this, deleted the first. The Lore is mostly correct and the powers seem powerful, however I have not used them. Riastrad in particular is amazing looking, but does not rear its head until demigod which I have not played yet. The most any Tuatha gets are 3 epics favored, but some of them have plenty of purviews instead. The companion is pretty cheap for what it is.
